Batik Center Panel with Hemp - Placemat
Batik Center Panel with Hemp - Placemat
Handmade using organic hemp and repurposed indigo batik fabrics from the Hmong hill tribe women of North Vietnam. The back of the mat is lined with fine cotton.
The Hmong live isolated in their hillside communities far to the north of Hanoi, preserving their traditional dress and way of life, largely untouched by outside influence.
Making hemp fabric is a laborious process; the end result is a strong durable cloth with the quality similar to linen. Today, a few ethnic minority groups still make traditional hemp fabric in Vietnam. Using century old techniques and traditions, the fabric is of high quality.
